Sion falls short of first Class 1 championship

Storm’s doubles rally not enough to overcome big deficit in girls title match.

SPRINGFIELD | The Notre Dame de Sion girls tennis team was on the edge of elimination.

The Storm trailed Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School 4-2 after singles play in its Missouri Class 1 state championship match Thursday at the Cooper Tennis Complex. The only way the Storm could win is if it won all three of its doubles matches.

Notre Dame de Sion coach Bill Munninghoff was hoping for a miracle, and though Country Day eventually won 5-3, he almost got his wish. His No. 2 doubles team won its match, his No. 3 team was leading its after one set, and his No. 1 team was on the verge of tying its up when it had a 5-4 lead in the second set.

“I was thinking, ‘Hey, maybe a miracle might happen,’ ” Munninghoff said. “But we didn’t have one in our bag today.”

Country Day eventually fought back and won the set 7-5, and Sion was denied a chance to win a state championship in its first year in Class 1. However, Munninghoff was still proud of the way his team responded to the pressure.

“We played our best tennis in the championship match, and we came up a little bit short,” Munninghoff said. “When you can do that, we don’t have to make any apologies. We lost to a really good team.”

Sion tennis squad takes aim

The timing for the Notre Dame de Sion girls tennis team couldn’t have been much better.

Despite incurring a slight increase in enrollment at the school, the Storm tennis team moved to Class 1 from Class 2 in state competition. This happened to occur during a year in which Sion has produced perhaps its strongest team ever.

That culminates this week when Sion competes in the Missouri girls tennis state tournament Thursday through Saturday at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield. After knocking off defending champion Pembroke Hill in the team sectionals, the Storm will compete in team competition Thursday.

Sion’s top two players, sophomore Ali Patterson and freshman Amy Barnthouse, will compete in singles.

“Hopefully we’ll have a productive Thursday, Friday and Saturday,” said Storm coach Bill Munninghoff. “We have two very good players at the top of our lineup, but the key to us all season has been that we’re strong one through six.

“Obviously, there’s a little more pressure when you get to the final four. I would hope they play as well as they have throughout the season.”

Sion plays perennial powerhouse John Burroughsof St. Louis in its team semifinal Thursday morning. A victory there would advance the Storm to the final that afternoon against the winner of the semifinal between Mary Institute/Country Day School of St. Louis and Forsyth.

Pembroke Hill’s Erin Bleakley and Kiersten Goza will play in the Class 1 doubles competition.

In Class 2, Katie Jackson and Joellen Redlingshafer of St. Teresa’s will compete in doubles.
