The Storm tennis team captured the 3rd place trophy in their first trip to the State Tournament in 20 years by beating Incarnate Word Academy.
SION THIRD IN CLASS 2: The week got rough for Notre Dame de Sion tennis coach Bill Munninghoff four days before the state tournament when he received word his 88-year-old father had passed away at his home in Newport, Ky. Things didn’t go his team’s way in the Class 2 semifinals Thursday morning. The Storm fought Columbia Rock Bridge hard before falling 5-3. Sion rallied strongly in the afternoon, however, and shut out Incarnate Word 5-0 in the third-place match. Munninghoff then left Springfield and headed to Kentucky to attend his father’s funeral today. “Rock Bridge and St. Joseph’s are the gold standard in Class 2,” Munninghoff said. “To come down here for the first time and trade body punches with them … “We don’t need to make any apologies or excuses. We were beaten by a better team.” Pembroke Hill, Notre Dame de Sion take aim on state championships While Pembroke Hill is a heavy favorite to repeat as the Missouri Class 1 high school girls tennis state champion Thursday in Springfield, Notre Dame de Sion should not be forgotten as it attempts to win its first Class 2 team state title. The Sion girls, who defeated St. Teresa’s Academy in the sectional final to get to state, are scheduled to play Columbia Rock Bridge in a semifinal Thursday morning at the Cooper Tennis Complex. Defending champion St. Joseph’s Academy and Incarnate Word, two St. Louis schools, will square off in the other semifinal. The winners will play for the team championship in the afternoon. “We’ve been working on this for the past couple of years,” said Sion coach Bill Munninghoff. “We’ve gotten several doubles teams and individuals to state, but they were really wanting to qualify a team this year. “The girls have played really well in the last month. They’re peaking at the right time. It’s a tribute to how hard they’ve worked in practice. “Hopefully, we’ll go down there and represent the Kansas City area well.” Sion looks to be led by freshman Ali Patterson at No. 1 singles. Patterson also won the singles title at districts qualifying her for the Class 2 singles competition which begins Friday morning at the Cooper Tennis Complex. Meg North, Molly Barnthouse, Caroline Roth, Lauren Chalmers, Madison Wiedeman and Kyle Kilroy round out the Storm lineup. Oct. 15-The Storm tennis team advances to state by beating St. Teresa's.
