In preparation for a possible road trip to St. Louis for the Missouri state tournament, the young Notre Dame de Sion soccer team left the comforts of home last weekend for a two-game swing in Wichita. The Storm passed the road test by taking down the Kansas Class 5A-1A state runner-up Wichita-Kapaun Mt. Carmel 2-0, then Wichita Northwest 4-3. “The idea was to get away, we have a big freshmen class and we haven’t traveled with them (much) this year,” coach Matt Darby said. “(We’re) just wanting to get some experience.” Darby believes his team’s 12-3 record indicates the Storm appears to have found solid footing. Darby credits senior captains Madde Adkins, Katie Murphy and Carrie Barton for leading the younger players. “They’ve been around, they know what it takes,” Darby said.
The soccer team won the Blue Springs South Tournament with a 3-0 record. Sion edged out Lee's Summit, who was also 3-0 in the tournament, due to a point system that rewarded extra points for shut-out victories. Each of Sion's victories in the tournament were also shut-outs, thus making Sion the Tournament Champion.
The Storm defeated Divine Savior on Saturday 1-0. They are defending Wisconsin state champs and came into KC undefeated and ranked #22 in the ESPN Rise National Soccer Poll. | |||||
