Quarterfinals 5/26/07 NDS vs St Pius X
The scoring began early in this quarterfinal match and did not last long. Only minutes into the contest, Madde Adkins put Sion on top 1-0. Kate Vignatelli played a beautiful through ball; Adkins raced onto the ball and was able to do the rest. Madde took one touch towards the goal and pounded the ball to the upper left corner of the goal, not allowing the Pius keeper to even come close to saving the shot. Just a few minutes later, Sion added to their lead with a goal from Junior Lauren Chalmers—her second goal in two consecutive playoff games. The storm had a re-start just 40 yards out from the Pius goal. Alli Dandurand played a chip shot over the line of Pius defenders as Annie Shepard ran onto the ball. Annie brought the ball down out of the air and proceeded to head towards goal on the breakaway. Pius goalkeeper Rosie Campbell made a great save on Shepard’s shot but was unable to corral the ball as it bounced rolled out of her reach. Following the progression of play and ready to put back any rebounds, Chalmers was right in front of the goal to knock home the second goal of the game. The rest of the game was a struggle for Sion to score on Rosie Campbell. Melissa Pacheco returned to action for Sion today after sitting out for two weeks with a sprained ankle. Pacheco recorded the Shut-out for the Storm—her sixth of the season. The game ended in a 2-0 victory for Sion and a first ever trip to the State Final Four for the school! Congratulations girls and good luck in St. Louis for State.
Sectionals 5/22/07 NDS vs Warrensburg
The sectional match-up between Sion and Warrensburg would be one of strength versus strength. Warrensburg came into the match with a 17-4 and probably one of the best players in the state, Anna White-a player with 29 goals and 18 assists. However, the Storm had only given up 2 goals in its last 8 games. One of those goals was a penalty kick and the other was Michaela Fulmer’s 49th goal of her season. The game was heavily dominated by the Storm. Sion recorded 31 shots while Katie Gorman only had to make two saves. Sion received goals from Lauren Chalmers, Kate Vignatelli, and Madde Adkins. Assisting on the goals were Kathryn Robards, Katie Murphy, and Kate Vignatelli. The Storm defense did a stellar job keeping Anna White in check throughout most of the game. But she was able to sneak one great shot past Gorman. The final score of the match was 3-1. Sion now moves on to play St. Pius X this Saturday at Noon for a chance to play in the State Final Four. The game is being played at Excelsior Springs High School.
District Championship 5/16/07 NDS vs O’Hara
Sion came out in this district championship match very strong. From the very beginning of the game, the girls were playing with intensity, poise, and skill. Despite controlling most of the first half, Sion was deadlocked at 0 going into halftime. In the second half, Michaela Fulmer struck a ball from 35 yards out that sailed over Katie Gorman’s outstretched arms. The game was now 1-0 in favor of O’Hara. The storm responded very well to being down. Soon after O’Hara’s goal, Sion was awarded a corner kick. Alli Dandurand played a beautiful cross into the box and Kate Vignatelli side volleyed the ball right into the back of the net. The game was now knotted and 1-1. The rest of the match was a hard fought battle that did not see either team score during regulation. Sion outshot O’Hara 29-6 and added eight corner kicks as well. In the fourth overtime, Sion was able to get their well deserved game winning goal. Junior midfielder Kathryn Robards was able to break down two defenders inside O’hara’s penalty area and then out-hustle all other opponents as she slotted the ball across the box to Kate Vignatelli. Vignatelli knocked home her second goal of the game and sent the team home with a District Championship and a berth into the sectional game against Warrensburg. Sion will play that sectional game next Tuesday at Harrisonville High School at 6pm.
District Semi-Final 5/15/07 NDS vs Clinton
Sion opened the 2007 playoff run last night with a greatly balanced attack. Sion saw four different players get in on the scoring action. Jr. forward Stephanie Brown netted two goals of her own, while Sr. midfielder Annie Shepard, So. midfielder Carrie Barton, and So. forward Madde Adkins each added a goal of their own. The storm defense played well again while earning the shutout for Katie Gorman and Jessica Grindstaff. Sion now advances to the Class 1 District 14 championship game against O’Hara. The game will be played at 6pm Wednesday at Harrisonville High School.
5/11/07 NDS vs Bishop Miege
The Sion soccer team ended their regular season play in a disappointing loss to Bishop Miege. Sion came out firing on all cylinders. The girls quickly gained control of the game from the get go. The storm had numerous opportunities on goal, but was unable to send the ball into the back of the net. The team was the victim of a seemingly tough call just midway through the first half. A Sion defender was called for a foul inside her own penalty area and Miege was awarded a penalty kick. The Stags led 1-0 after Jen French knocked in the P.K. The rest of the game was a hard fought battle which resulted in a 1-0 loss for the Storm. Sion will begin district play next Tuesday as District 14’s #1 seed. The girls will either play Clinton High School or Center High at Harrisonville High School.
5/9/07 NDS vs Platte County
Sion traveled to Platte County to take on the Pirates. Sion began the scoring early and it would continue to come throughout the game. When the game ended, Sion had received goals from five different players and won the match 8-0. Kate Vignatelli scored three goals, Stephanie Brown added two, and Annie Shepard, Cat Yuille, and Madde Adkins all added a goal apiece. Katie Gorman and Jessica Grindstaff both played in goal for injured keeper Melissa Pacheco. The two combined for a split shut-out. The storm continued their defensive dominance as they did not allow the opposition to score for the fifth consecutive game. Sion will conclude the regular season this Friday as they travel to Miege for a 6:30pm game.
5/7/07 NDS vs Aquinas
The game between Aquinas and Sion was cancelled due to weather.
5/4/07 NDS vs Lee’s Summit West
The Storm took on the two time defending class 1 state champion last night at Lee’s Summit West High School. For the second consecutive game, the girls played to a double overtime stalemate. Both teams played extremely well and played with great effort. Sion had a handful of wonderful opportunities on goal, but was unable to put the ball in the back of the net. At the end of the 2nd overtime, the Sion defense had completed four full games and four full overtimes without giving up a goal. The defense has played 360 minutes without allowing an opponent to score. Great work girls! The storm will be back in action Monday against St. Thomas Aquinas.
5/2/07 NDS vs O’Hara
Senior night against O’Hara was postponed until next Monday’s home game against Aquinas. The O’Hara game was played last night at Rockhurst High School due to the rain. Sion started the game extremely well and was on the attack most of the match. Alli Dandurand hit the crossbar twice on free kicks within a matter of five minutes. The storm possessed the ball beautifully and had a number of great chances to score. The girls had a season high 17 corner kicks. They also were able to get off 34 shots during the 100 minutes of regulation and overtime. The game ended in a scoreless tie. The Sion defense was successful at posting its fifth shutout in the past seven games.
4/30/07 NDS vs St. Paul’s Lutheran
The storm was able to reschedule last week’s rainout with St. Paul’s for Monday night. Sion was able to control possession most of the game and recorded a season high 43 shots. After numerous chances on goal, the scoring started midway through the first half and continued throughout the second half. Freshman Kelsey Salzman scored her first career goal and Madde Adkins netted her first of her sophomore year. Annie Shepard and Kate Vignatelli both contributed with their fifth goals of the season. Carrie Barton finished a nice breakaway to add to the score. And Stephanie Brown rounded out the balanced scoring attack with two goals of her own. St. Paul’s traveled in from Concordia for the second time in five days and played extremely tough throughout the game. Sion will next take on O’Hara this Wednesday.
4/24/07 NDS vs St. Pius
The game last night against Pius was nearly cancelled due to strong thunderstorms. The game was moved up to 4:00 to try and beat the weather that was approaching the metro area. The first half was dominated by Sion as they took shot after shot on the Pius goal. The Storm was unable to break through with a goal in the first half. The two teams were only able to play ten minutes before lightning came and ended the match. Luckily, Sion was able to get a goal from Kate Vignatelli just minutes into the second half. Sion out-shot St. Pius 26-3 in the 50 minutes that was played. Since the game did extend into the second half, the game is recorded as a final result.
4/21/07 NDS vs. Incarnate Word
Coming off of a big win against Cor Jesu, Sion did not have much time to rest. Saturday morning brought with it a match against the Nation’s 4th ranked team. The girls were a bit tired and slow for the first few minutes of the game but soon calmed down and started playing their game. The defense played extremely well, holding Incarnate to just one goal in the first half of play. Incarnate was attacking from all areas of the field, but Sion’s defense was not giving in. Alli Dandurand and Melissa Pacheco played extremely well and were not without help—Katie Murphy, Jill McCaffrey, and Caroline Roth were more than ready for the challenge that the State’s #1 team was bringing. The halftime score was 1-0 in favor of Incarnate. The Storm came out the second half with much more energy than the first half saw. The defense remained strong and the offense thrived on the defense’s effort. Kate Vignatelli and Madde Adkins had numerous moments of brilliance. In all, the Storm produced two breakaway chances, hit the crossbar twice, and had a myriad of offensive chances. Incarnate, who had not given up a goal all year, was on their toes and on the brink of seeing the game tied. Unfortunately, the ball did not bounce Sion’s way, and Incarnate was somehow able to keep the ball out of their goal. While aggressively attacking to try and even the game’s score, Sion became vulnerable in the defensive third of the field. With less than a minute to go in the game, Incarnate caught Sion in transition. Streaking down their right side of the field, Incarnate’s right mid was able to receive the ball and head towards the end line to run the clock down. As Sion defenders converged on the ball, she was able to chip the ball towards Sion’s goal to make the final score 2-0. The team played extremely well this weekend in St. Louis, came away with two strong results, and will inevitably benefit from the two matches. Sion will return to action Tuesday at St. Pius.
4/20/07 NDS vs Cor Jesu
Sion and Cor Jesu played a great game Friday afternoon in St. Louis. The Storm came away from the match with a well deserved 2-1 victory. The team again benefited from two first career goals. Freshman Cathryn Yuille scored her first career goal in the first half to put Sion up 1-0. The play began in the midfield with wonderful possession and movement. Cat received the pass from Rachael Brennan, turned her defender, and slotted the ball past the goalie into the back of the net. Cor Jesu, streaking down the left side of the field in transition, Cor Jesu evened the score at 1 apiece just minutes before the half came to an end. The second forty minutes of the game was played very well by both teams, but Sion was able to strike the only goal of the half. Sophomore Carrie Barton put Sion ahead for good when she scored her first career goal. Carrie raced the ball down the left flank and chipped the goalie from 30 yards out. The second goal of the game for Sion was enough to propel the team to a great victory over one of St. Louis’ best teams.
4/17/07 NDS vs Pembroke Hill
Tuesday was Sion’s first home game of the season. The girls were very hungry for a good result and played very well. The goals definitely came in bunches last night. The team’s two captains, Annie Shepard and Alli Dandurand, led the way for the Storm. Shepard scored three goals while Dandurand added two goals and three assists. Kathryn Robards also scored a goal and had an assist. Kate Vignatelli scored the first goal of the game off of a re-start from Dandurand. Katie Gorman and Stephanie Brown both scored their first career Varsity goals during the match. Congratulations on a great game girls! The team travels east on I-70 this weekend to take on two of St. Louis’ best teams: Cor Jesu and Incarnate Word.
4/13/09 NDS vs DSHA
Sion welcomed the Dashers from Divine Savior Holy Angels to town this weekend. The players from the all-girls Catholic High School in Milwaukee stayed with Sion families for the weekend, went to class with the girls on Friday, and celebrated mass with Sion. However, when it came time for the two team’s to play, the game on Friday night was definitely of a competitive nature. Both teams played extremely well in the cold and rainy weather. Sion played its most complete game of the year to date. The play of the backs, mids, and forwards was magnificent. The team’s possession, shape, and defense were strong throughout the 80 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime. The game ended in a hard battled 0-0 tie. Congratulations to both teams for their stellar play Friday evening. What a great experience for both teams! Next year, Sion will travel to Milwaukee to play DSHA and continue the wonderful tradition of making friendships and memories through soccer.
4/12/07 NDS vs LSN
The storm played another wonderful game last night. This time, they faced off against local powerhouse Lee’s Summit North. The Broncos came into the match carrying a 9-1 record and a state ranking as #6 in big class. Sion came out a little sluggish in the first ten minutes of the game, but managed to keep the game scoreless while slowly beginning to play better. Lee’s Summit North sophomore forward, Morgan Marlborough, scored a beautiful goal midway through the first half. She had two Sion defenders marking her and was still able to turn and send a rifling left-footed shot to the upper 90 of the goal. The second half proved to be a much better story for Sion. The team played very well together and had several quality chances to score but came up short. The game ended in a 1-0 defeat for Sion. The team returns to action tomorrow at Rockhurst University against DSHA from Milwaukee, Wisconsin
NDS vs LSHS 4/5/07
The storm soccer team fell behind Lee's Summit High School early in the game. Lee's Summit had a corner kick within the first ten minutes of the game that bounced off a Sion player and rebounded into the goal. The score going into halftime remained 1-0 in favor of the Tigers. The second half was a different story for Sion though. The storm possessed the ball for the vast majority of the half but just couldn't find the back of the net. The defense played another fine game, and, as the game wore on, the offense played better and better. Unfortunately the ball didn't bounce Sion's way. The girls will play at Lee's Summit West next Tuesday at 6:30.
4/3/07 NDS vs. St. Teresa's The Sion soccer team played a great match last night against the # 2 team in the country, St. Teresa’s Academy. Midway through the first half, Sion struck first with a goal from Kate Vignatelli. Annie Shepard won a ball at midfield and found Cat Yuille who turned and found Vignatelli sprinting through the Star's defense. Kate Vig took the ball, and with a shot from 20 yards out, found the corner of the net. Sion was leading for the next fifteen minutes when STA evened the game at 1-1. Lauren Foulkes received a pass in the middle of the box, calmly turned, and found the side net of the goal. The game remained tied at 1-1 at the end of 80 hard fought minutes. Both teams had chances to score in the second half. Annie Shepard had a beautiful breakaway and chipped the goalie, but the ball hit the crossbar and bounced out. STA had their opportunities as well, but Melissa Pacheco and Alli Dandurand were seemingly always there to stop the Star’s attack. Melissa and Alli, along with Sion’s other three defenders-Roth, McCaffrey, and Murphy-withstood a flurry of shots in the final minutes of regulation. The game then proceeded to go into sudden victory overtime. After 85 minutes of a great game, the match was decided on a penalty kick awarded to STA when a foul was called in Sion's penalty area. Lauren Foulkes scored her second goal of the game on the overtime penalty shot to win the game. Sion has now played two defending state champs and has fought for ties at the end of each 80 minutes of regulation play. Keep up the strong play girls. The Storm will now take on Lee's Summit this Thursday.
3/29/07 NDS vs. BVNW The storm soccer team suffered a tough loss on Thursday afternoon to the Huskies of Blue Valley Northwest in the second round of the MO-KAN. Although Sion had a few nice opportunities on goal, including a chance in the final moments of the game, they were unable to put one in the net. Sion lost the game 1-0 and fall to 1-2-1 on the season. The final round of MO-KAN, scheduled for Saturday morning has been postponed for a later date. Sion will take on St. Theresa's Tuesday the 3rd at STA.
3/27/07 NDS vs. Olathe South (MO-KAN) The Sion soccer team opened up their MO-KAN tournament this year against defending Kansas 6-A state champion Olathe South. Olathe South is currently ranked #2 in the state of Kansas large class. The girls played another hard fought battle. After 80 minutes of play, the game was knotted up at 1 a piece. Annie Shepard hit a re-start from 30 yards out that hit off the cross bar, bounced down to the six, and was headed into the back of the net by Kate Vignatelli. Being a bracket tournament, the two teams went into a shootout to see who would advance. Melissa Pacheco made two saves, one beautiful diving stop in the corner, to keep the team even with South. After the first five shooters, the game was still knotted up, and the game was then sent into a sudden death shootout. Olathe South won when their sixth shooter scored. Penalty kicks were scored by Alli Dandurand, Katie Murphy, and Annie Shepard. Sion will now take on the loser of St. Theresa’s/BVNW on Thursday at 3pm. Great game tonight girls! NDS is now 1-1-1 on the year.
3/21/07 NDS vs. Ray-South The Storm bounced back very well Wednesday to record its first win of the season. Sion defeated Raytown South 4-1. Katie Murphy started the scoring in the first half with a re-start goal from 30 yards out. A few minutes later Lauren Chalmers got in on the scoring action when she finished a cross from Kelsey Salzman. Kelsey added another assist in the first half when Alli Dandurand scored off of another cross. Annie Shepard scored Sion’s lone goal of the second half on a blast, into the wind, from 20 yards out. Raytown South played very hard and fought the whole game, scoring in the late minutes of the match to make the final score 4-1. Katie Gorman has played extremely well in goal filling in for Melissa Pacheco. Gorman was two shots away this week from two shutout performances.
3/19/07 NDS vs. Liberty The Sion soccer team tasted their first action of the year Monday night in the Lee’s Summit Tournament. Unfortunately the outcome of the game didn’t go the Storm’s way. But a 1-0 result for the first game of the year with multiple girls missing for Spring Break and injury was very commendable. The girls played a hard fought game, but, in the end, the ball didn’t bounce their way as a handful of opportunities were saved by Liberty or they narrowly missed the goal. Liberty scored in the first half of play on a nice goal from Brooke Williams. | ||
