Softball Banquet – Friday, October 19 at 6:30 p.m.

St. Pius, Sept 10 - Put one in the win column!  The cooler air temperature wasn’t any indication of how heated up Sion was for a win.  Pius scored their only run in the top of the 1st inning on a fielder’s choice.  Sion tried to get things started in the bottom of the inning when Katie Huffman tripled on a shot to right field but was left stranded.  Brooke Hill made a Hank Aaron style catch in the top of the 2nd on a ball hit to deep left center field.  Lori Katlin reached 1st base on an error in the bottom of the 3rd inning.  Huffman came up and hit a deep blast to centerfield.  Do it with me…going, going, gone…a two run home run!  The inning ended with Steph Wilborn stranded after a single to right center field.  Wilborn singled in the bottom of the 6th and advanced to second when Kat O’Halloran laid down a sacrifice bunt.  Beka Knackstedt advanced Wilborn to 3rd when she grounded out to Pius’ shortstop.  Wilborn then scored on a passed ball.  Sarah Boos singled on a fly ball to right field and Jessica Grindstaff hit a single.  With bases loaded and two outs in the top of 7th, Pius was threatening to at least tie the score if not take the lead.  Huffman fielded the 3rd out to end the game.

RBI’s:  Huffman (2)

Winning Pitcher:  Beka Knackstedt with 4 strike outs, 3 walks

Score:  3-1

KC Metro Tournament

William Chrisman, Aug 23 –  Steph Wilborn started the game off with a double.   She scored when Brooke Hill hit one to their right fielder who couldn’t handle the ball.  Chrisman scored one run in the top of the 2nd making it a 1-1 game.  Jessica Grindstaff led off in the 2nd inning and rocked a double.  Then the lighting and thunder came and game was called.  We resumed play on Thursday afternoon.  We picked up where we left off in the bottom of the 2nd inning with one out and Grindstaff on third.  Lori Katlin came to the plate and had a sacrifice bunt which scored Grindstaff.  Chrisman then scored another two runs in the top of the 3rd but Sion battled back.  Melissa Pacheco led off with a double and scored when Wilborn hit a single.   Katie Huffman came to the plate and hit a stand-up double to left field.  Grindstaff reached base on an error and Huffman scored.  Huffman led off in the 6th with a single, then stole 2nd.  Brooke Hill then hit a double to score Huffman.  Kat O’Halloran was then walked.  With base runners in scoring position once again, Lori Katlin hit a single and both Hill and O’Halloran scored.

RBIs:  Katlin (3); Hill (2); Huffman (1); Wilborn (1); Grindstaff (1)

Winning Pitcher:  Beka Knackstedt with 2 strike outs and 4 walks

Score:  8-6

Blue Springs South, Aug 23 – Sion did a great job of holding Blue Springs South to a 2-1 lead through 5 innings.  Blue Springs South’s pitcher was very unforgiving to our first nine batters.  She struck out a total of 14 Sion batters.  It wasn’t until the 4th inning when Melissa Pacheco hit a double and then took advantage of a wild pitch and advanced to 3rd.   Steph Wilborn hit a sacrifice fly ball to right field to score Pacheco.  Blue Springs South exploded in the bottom of the 6th inning when they scored 4 more runs on 3 errors.

RBIs:  Wilborn (1)

Score:  1-6

Park Hill South, Aug 20 – Sion won the tournament opener against Park Hill South.  Two hard hits to centerfield were both sucked up like a Hoover vacuum by Katie Huffman in the first inning.  Jessica Grindstaff got things started off with a single followed by walks for Lori Katlin, Kat O’Halloran and Katherine Love.  Melissa Pacheco ripped a hard hit double which scored Lori Katlin and Kat O’Halloran.  Steph Wilborn later walked with bases loaded causing another run to score.  Brooke Hill reached first base by a fielder’s choice.  In the 4th inning Melissa Pacheco hit one (say it with me) deep to center field for a solo home run.  Brooke Hill, who hit a double, scored in the 5th inning when Jessica Grindstaff singled.

RBIs:  Pacheco (3); Hill (2); Wilborn (1); Grindstaff (1)

Winning Pitcher:  Beka Knackstedt with 4 strike outs and only 3 walks

Score:  7-5

Oak Park, Aug 20 – The second game of the tournament did not yield the same results as the first game.  We played a very tough Oak Park team that consisted of many girls hungry for college scholarships to play softball.  Katie Huffman was the starting pitcher and gave up a few hard hits including a 3-run home run in the first inning.  Beka Knackstedt was brought in for relief and finished the game out.  Melissa Pacheco hit one (say it with me) deep to right center off of a change-up for a solo home run.   In the 4th inning, Lori Katlin fielded an unassisted double play.

RBIs:  Pacheco (1)

Score:  1-10
