The Notre Dame de Sion softball team enters district play Thursday with a distinct advantage over most opponents -- two capable senior starting pitchers.

The Storm, seeded No. 3 behind Blue Springs and Raytown South, have a 15-8 record this season behind a 6-3 record from Allison Able and an 8-3 mark from Josie Rose. Depending on the situation, the Storm can use its distinctive styles to throw off the opposing hitters.

“Josie throws it hard,” coach Ben Keech said. “She’s going to get a lot of strikeouts, but some of the better teams will catch up to her speed. That’s where Allison comes in. She’s a junkball pitcher. She’s got one of the best dropballs I’ve seen. It’s their opposite styles that make them effective.”

The Storm opens Thursday against Hickman Mills, before likely squaring off with Raytown South in the semifinals. Keech expects low-scoring games, which makes his top two hitters even more important. Junior shortstop Melissa Pacheco leads off and is batting around .420, and junior third baseman Stephanie Wilborn bats second and leads the team in runs batted in.

“They set the stage for how we’re going to do offensively,” Keech said. “If they’re not on, it makes it a little more difficult.”

Sept. 14- The Storm softball team capped off a great week with victories by both the varsity and junior varsity teams at Oak Grove. Solid pitching, defense and hitting (including home runs by Margaret Gude and Beka Knackstedt) led to the 9-1 (var) and 18-2 (jv) victories.

Aug. 23- Storm Softball opened their 2006 season with the Kansas City Metro Tournament at Adair Park.  Sion swept away the Raytown Blue Jays with a 6 to 1 victory.  It was a fine performance by the varsity team for their first game of the season.

In the twin bill of the evening, Sion was matched against Blue Springs South.  Sion held the Jaguars with a 2 to 0 lead going into the top of the 6th.  4 runs were surrendered in the top of the 6th and 1 in the 7th.  Storm rallied for 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th, but still fell 1 run short.  Final score - Blue Springs South 5, Sion Storm 4.

Sion returns to Adair Park Wednesday night for the completion of the tournament.

Lee’s Summit Tournament

Monday, 8-21-06, 4:00 game at Legacy Park - Sion vs. Lee’s Summit North

The JV team had a rough start to the season, playing Lee’s Summit North, in the first game of the tournament. Storm put up a good fight but was not able to come out the victor. Sion lost 7-1 in a hard fought battle. On a positive note, with 5 new freshman on the team, the girls truly go to know each other better on the field. We all know there’s a “W” for them in the future.

Monday, 8-21-06, 7:00 game at Legacy Park – Sion vs. Truman

The girls worked together well. Good pitching, coupled with some good hits, Sion had the lead for most of the game. Unfortunately, they couldn’t quite hold on to it. The game went into overtime using international tiebreaker rules. Sion, being the visitors, was successful in scoring one run, however, in the bottom of the inning, Truman was able to drive in two runs. Sion was defeated by Truman 8-9 in an exciting battle.

Tuesday, 8-22-06, 7:00 game at Legacy Park.- Sion vs. Kearney

This was the night, and there was confidence in the air. Winning the coin toss was just the beginning. The girls battled and they did it. They got the “W” by beating a rumored to be, “very good” team from Kearney. With a potpourri of great drives, good defensive play by all, and a solid pitching performance by Beka Knackstedt, (who went the distance) Kearney was defeated, 3-4. Sion Wins! It has only just begun!!!
