Storm Softball ended its season in a hard fought extra-innings game against Blue Springs in the second round of the district tournament. Congratulations to Alycia Bachkora, Jessica Bachkora, and Melissa Pacheco who were named to the All-District 1st team. Lauren Hill, Maria Rettinger, and Alison Able were selected to the 2nd team. Alycia Bachkora and Jessica Bachkora were selcted to the KC Star's All-Metro 1st team. | ||||||||

Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004: District play began against Hickman Mills on a cool, drizzly day that ended in a down pour. The 1 1/2 inning game ended with the Storm winning 13-0 -- enough said. Highlights were shown on Metro Sports that night. Friday, Oct. 8, 2004: The Storm took on Blue Springs. It was an exciting game from start to finish. With the score tied zero in the 3rd, Steph Wilborn lead off with a single to center. She was forced out on Melissa Pacheco's ground ball hit. Maria Rettinger followed with a hit to left and the game's first run was scored on Jessica Bachkora's single to right. Then B.S. scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the 3rd on two Storm errors. In the 4th, an interference call at 3rd base gave another run to the Storm which tied the score. B.S. came right back and scored two more runs with help by another Storm error. In the 5th B.S. scored 2 more runs with a walk and a homerun. But in the top of the 7th with the Storm down 6-2, the Sion offense came to life. Freshman Melissa Pacheco singled to center, J Bachkora hit a long fly ball double to center scoring Pacheco. Senior Alycia Bachkora singled to center scoring 2 more runs. On the throw to the infield Alycia slid into 2nd base just ahead of the tag. Allison Able sacrificed Alycia to 3rd and Alycia scored the tying run when senior Lauren Hill ripped a shot at the short stop that went off her glove. Game was tied 6-6. The Storm took the lead in the top of the 8th when Pacheco started with a single to center. She promptly stole 2nd and scored on Rettinger's 3rd hit of the day. But B.S. score 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th to win the game 8-7. Storm's defense was shaky committing 7 errors, but the offense pounded out 16 hits compared to B.S.'s 8. The Storm was led in hitting by Jessica Bachkora, Melissa Pacheco and Maria Rettinger, collecting 3 hits each. Alycia Bachkora, Allison Able, Re Larson and Steph Wilborn collecting 2 hits each. Sion finished the season with an 18-4 record, the 2nd best in Sion's softball history. We say goodbye and will miss three seniors who have finished their Storm careers, Alycia Bachkora, Lauren Hill and Jean Laubinger. Alycia will go on to college to play another 4 years of the beloved game. THANKS FOR THE RIDE GIRLS, IT WAS A LOT OF FUN!!!!! Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004: The regular season came to a close at Grandview with Sion finishing with a 17 & 3 season. The Storm ruined the Grandview Bulldogs senior night with a 6-0 victory. Josie Rose pitched a one hit shutout. The offense was led by junior Jessica Bachkora who hit two inside the parks homeruns and a triple and had 3 RBI's. The biggest challenge of the day was the competition between senior Alycia Bachkora and sophomore Re Larson to see who could hit the longest and most foul balls. Alycia hit the longest (250 ft) and Re hit the most with 11 foul balls in one at bat. Districts start Thursday; First game is against Hickman Hills and second against Blue Springs. Monday, October 4, 2004: Another win for the Varsity softball team, this time against Pleasant Hill, winning 10-0 in five innings. The Storm played a flawless game defensively, with no errors and Allison Able pitched a no hitter. In the first inning senior Lauren Hill hit a rocket out to the left field which gave her a double and knocked in two runs. The third inning, brought a triple to the right field by freshman Melissa Pacheco and another RBI. Both girls finished the game with 3 RBI's each. Tuesday, September 28, For the third time in the last four games, the Storm goes into extra innings for a 9-7 win against Odessa. The Storm offense was led by Jessica Bachkora who had a homerun, double and a single. Melissa Pacheco had three singles and Lauren Hill and Andrea Fulks finished with 2 singles each. Top of the 8th inning with two outs the offense came to life when Jessica hit a double, Alycia next up was walked for the third time and then both advanced a base by a wild pitch. Allison Able then drove in the game winning single up the middle to drive in both runs. Allison was the winning pitcher. September 23, 2004, Senior Night: The Storm varsity played host to St. Theresa's and honored the three seniors on the team, Alycia Bachkora, Lauren Hill and Jean Laubinger. These girls and their parents were introduced and presented gifts by the remaining team members after the game. The crowd for this game was one of the largest and loudest these girls have seen in their four years of playing at Sion, with a DJ and free pizza and soda for everyone. But to everyone's dismay, Sion was shut out by St. Theresa's 5-0 with only three hits. September 24, 2004: A much better night for the players when they hosted Raytown and won the game 9-1 with 10 hits. The team was led with Alycia Bachkora with 3 hits, 2 of them doubles, and 3 RBI's. Next was Jessica Bachkora with 2 hits, 1 double and 2 RBI's, a hit from Melissa Pacheco, Allison Able, Maria Rettinger, Josie Rose and Re Larson. Other RBI's by Allison Able, Lauren Hill, and Re Larson. Allison was the winning pitcher. September 24, 2004 - O'Hara Tournament: The Sion Storm swept the tournament with both Varsity and JV teams taking first place in their division. Two of the three games were won in 8 innings. The Varsity team won the 1st game against St. Pius 3-2 with Allison Able throwing an 8 inning complete game. Sion’s offense generated 11 hits with 8 of the 9 starters collecting a hit. Jessica Bachkora and Melissa Pacheco led with 2 hits each. The team was held to 2 runs until the bottom of the 8 inning when Alycia Bachkora led off with a single to left. She then stole 2nd on the next pitch and advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch. With 2 outs and a pitch count of 3-2, Re Larson drove a single to left for the game winning RBI. The 2nd game of the day against O’Hara, Josie Rose threw a complete game shutout. Allowing 5 hits, the offense was held in check until the 5th inning when Steph Wilborn got things started with a single to center. Jessica Bachkora followed with a single to center. Both moved up a base with aggressive base running and Alycia Bachkora drove in the first 2 runs of the game with a single to left. Allison Able followed with a double to right center. One out later Re Larson singled to center to complete the scoring. Game was won 4-0. In the championship game against Smithville, it was a battle that went back and forth for 8 innings with Sion scoring a run in the top of the 1st and Smithville scoring 2 runs in the 1st. Sion scored single runs in the 3rd and 5th innings to take a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the 5th. Smithville came back and took the lead when Allison Able tired and Josie Rose came in and shut down Smithville by allowing 1 hit the rest of the game. Maria Rettinger scored the winning run after she hit a double. The Storm’s 11 hit attack was led by Maria Rettinger with 3 hits and 2 hits each for Alycia Bachkora, Jessica Bachkora, Melissa Pacheco and Josie Rose. Additional highlights for the tournament were Sion’s pitchers only allowing 5 walks in 3 games, Jessica Bachkora making a diving catch and robbing her cousin Katie from O’Hara, a hit and senior Lauren Hill (the Wall) catching 4 games in 24 hours, a task not many would attempt. Alycia Bachkora hobbled through half of the O’Hara game and all of the championship game after hurting her knee while making a play. After presentation of the trophy and championship pictures, the team started the victory celebration by dumping 2 large coolers of water on to the winning coach, Ben Keech. All went home happy. Friday, September 17: Against Raytown South - The varsity softball team once again battled to win with a 2-0 victory. Jessica Bachkora started the game off with a double to the left field. After stealing third, her sister, Alycia coming up two batters later, hit a long sacrifice fly to the center to score Jessica. In the 4th inning Alycia hit a single to the left fielder. Melissa Pacheco moved her over and Lauren Hill hit a hard ball past the short stop to the the center fielder to gain a single and score Alycia. Allison Able was the winning pitcher. Senior night will be Thursday, Sept. 23. September 13: Against St. Pius Varsity won 10-5 against some very good pitching. Jessica Bachkora belted an in the park homerun in the second inning and Maria Rettinger had a hard hit double in the 5th. With bases loaded, the Storm turned a very difficult to get, triple play against St. Pius in the 2nd inning. Winning pitcher, Josie Rose. | ||
