Notre Dame de Sion’s Schorgl wins Kenneth Smith Golf Award

By COLE YOUNG

The Kansas City Star

Carolyn Schorgl certainly had no aspirations of winning any golf awards when she began classes at Notre Dame de Sion four years ago, let alone one awarded to the top player in the city.

In fact, Schorgl wanted to play field hockey for the Storm, not golf.

On Wednesday, though, there were no field hockey awards handed out at Sion. Instead, Schorgl, a senior, was presented the Kenneth Smith Award, a trophy given to the top female golfer in the greater Kansas City area.

Not bad for a golfer who was simply humoring her father by hitting the links her freshman year.

“I started playing golf because my dad wanted me to play and for the social aspect,” Schorgl said. “After my first practice, though, I loved it.”

Since that summer, Schorgl’s game has grown exponentially, culminating this October when she tied for seventh in Missouri Class 2 and led the Storm to a state title.

“I’ve never seen someone work as hard on their game as she has,” Sion coach Dana Hoeper said.

In addition to her performance on the course, Smith Award representative Pat McMahon said Schorgl was selected for her work in other fields as well. This fall, Schorgl helped raise more than $30,000 for the school’s financial aid program and has been a volunteer at a local hospital.

Schorgl will attend Nebraska next year on a golf scholarship.

“I know some of the girls playing up there, and the coach is pretty laid back, so I think I’ll fit pretty well,” Schorgl said. “Its location is good too, not too close to home, but close enough I can go home when I want to.”

This is the second time a Sion golfer has won the award. Ellen Hoeper won the award in 2004.

De Sion overtakes Kickapoo for title

It takes near-record scores to beat the Lady Chiefs, who finished 10th last year.

Allen Vaughan

News-Leader

Bolivar — Standing on the 18th green and watching teammate Jessica Dillard come up the fairway, Kickapoo High School senior Stephanie Rosetta's head morphed into a calculator.

"I was trying to do some quick math, trying to figure out what score we needed," said Rosetta, the lone Kickapoo senior.

After sticking her approach 15 feet from the hole, Dillard sank the putt, eliciting cheers from the anxious Kickapoo crowd.

But in the end, even after tying for the fifth-best 36-hole score in state history (665), it wasn't good enough for Kickapoo to hold on and win the Class 2 state championship Tuesday at Silo Ridge Golf and Country Club.

Notre Dame de Sion came back from a 7-stroke deficit to win its first state championship since 2002 with a 661, the second-best 36-hole score ever.

The Storm scorched Silo Ridge with a 323, the third-best 18-hole score in state history, compared to Kickapoo's 334.

It was a reversal of fortune for the Storm as they couldn't hold on to a 1-stroke lead a year ago, finishing second.

"We used all five players' scores during these last two days. It was a total team effort," Notre Dame senior Carolyn Schorgl said.

Parkway West senior Catherine Dolan took the individual crown with a two-over-par 146, accompanying her first-day 72 with a 74 Tuesday. She topped Francis Howell Central senior Mabrie Cain by three strokes.

Nerinx Hall senior Kristen Hamel was third (153), Blue Springs South senior Plern Proomboobpa was fourth (154) and Ursuline Academy senior Jacque Bardgett was fifth (155).

The Kickapoo players were obviously disappointed. The scores weren't as low as they wanted and each said they could have shaved more than one stroke off each of their scores.

"I had a bad round. I could have helped our score. But we've learned there's no I in team, especially today," Kickapoo sophomore Mary Tunnell said.

Sophomore Jessica Dillard led the way, finishing in a tie for seventh with a 157, shooting a clutch 77 Tuesday.

"This was my best round of the year," Dillard said. "I had two birdies and putted at two more.

"I had a 78 before, but not on a course this tough."

Tara Fuchs rebounded from a first-day 90 to shoot 81. Rosetta had an 87 and Tunnell and Lindsey Johnson posted 88s.

While disappointed, Kickapoo has many reasons to be pleased with its finish and its future.

Last year, the Chiefs finished 10th, 80 strokes off the pace. This year, it took one of the best performances in state history to best them.

"We'll do it next year and it won't be close," Dillard said.

And then there's next year. Four of the top five players wll return.

As the lone senior, Rosetta's contributions won't go overlooked or be forgotten, her teammates said. As the No. 5 player Monday, she bailed out others with higher scores, shooting a first-day 83.

"We're only losing one senior, but she's a pretty good one," junior Tara Fuchs said.

As for a teary-eyed Rosetta, she was teeter-tottering between upset and happy.

"It's hard to smile and cry at the same time," she said.

Fitting: Sion golfers storm back to win state

By COLE YOUNG

The Kansas City Star

BOLIVAR, Mo. | The Notre Dame de Sion golfers had to wait four years, but they finally got to see coach Dana Hoeper show off her gymnastic prowess.

Hoeper did a roundoff just off the first tee at the Silo Ridge Golf and Country Club to celebrate Sion’s Class 2 state championship.

The Storm came back from a 7-shot deficit after the first round to win the state team title by 4 strokes over Springfield Kickapoo.

“Last year we were ahead by 1 stroke going into the final day and lost, so we thought this year we would try coming from behind,” senior Carolyn Schorgl joked.

Schorgl and her teammates caught fire on day two. Schorgl, with a 5-over 77 Tuesday, led Sion with 157 overall. That was good enough for a tie for seventh place. She was joined in the top 10 by junior Celeste Gassman, who shot a two-day total of 159.

The big surprise for the Storm came from Francie Reintjes. The freshman shot a 91 on the opening day and followed that with an 81 in her second round. Reintjes had a chance to go even lower but had putting trouble on the final hole.

“Francie was unbelievable,” Hoeper said. “She got that score with good old-fashioned golf. She didn’t get lucky or anything like that on a hole. She played good golf.”

Sion’s second-day score of 322 was the third-lowest 18-hole score posted in state golf tournament history. Its 661 36-hole score was the second lowest of all time and the lowest on a par-72 course.

The top individual from the Kansas City area was Blue Springs South’s Plern Promboobpa. After getting off to a sluggish start on the second day, Promboobpa rallied to shoot a 5-over 77. That round, coupled with her 77 from Monday, gave her a 154 overall and earned fourth place.

“We’re ecstatic,” said Blue Springs South coach Mike McGown. “With the rough start she got off to and for her to hang in there and stick with the game plan, we are pleased.”

Promboobpa was 5 over after nine holes but shot even par on the back nine.

Catherine Dolan from Parkway West won the individual title with a 2-over 146.

Notre Dame de Sion outduels St. Thomas Aquinas in Mo-Kan Invitational

By COLE YOUNG

The Kansas City Star

After battling a strong southerly breeze on Monday, one word described many of the high school golfers at Blue Hills Country Club — frustrated.

Girls from 20 teams battled the weather conditions and turned in higher-than-normal scores in the Mo-Kan Invitational.

“It was really tough today,” said St. Thomas Aquinas sophomore Gianna Misenhelter, who tied with Olathe East sophomore Allison Forristal for first place in the tournament with an 8-over-par 80. “The wind wasn’t like a constant blow. It was gusts of wind all day, so it was hard to pick what clubs to hit. It was really hard for everyone.”

Windy conditions or not, neither Misenhelter nor Forristal was pleased with her performance.

“I couldn’t find anything that worked,” Forristal said. “At first I was driving the ball well and couldn’t putt. Then, as it went on, it all switched on the back nine. I was starting to putt, but the drives would go all over.”

Notre Dame de Sion played host to the tournament and won the team title with a score of 342, 1 stroke better than Aquinas.

Finishing 1 stroke out of first simply added to the frustration for Aquinas.

“There are good 80s and you have bad 80s, and that was not a good 80,” Misenhelter said. “I didn’t putt well today. Even though the wind was blowing and it’s hard to control that, you can always putt well, and I didn’t do that today and that’s really what killed me.”

While Notre Dame de Sion didn’t have the overall champion, it had two golfers tie for third place. Carolyn Schorgl and Celeste Gassman each shot 82. All four of the scoring golfers for Sion shot 90 or below.

As coach Dana Hoeper watched her Sion golfers make the turn, each of them had looks of disgust regarding their performances.

Hoeper simply told her girls to stay focused.

“Every time I saw the girls, they were all saying how they were playing so bad,” Hoeper said. “I told them to hang in there, that it was going to be a tough day. That’s what they did. They all played better on the back. I was very, very pleased to see them hang in there and pull it together.”

Monday’s team performance has Hoeper feeling good about where her Sion squad is as it gets ready for the final stretch before the state tournament.

“Winning this is wonderful,” Hoeper said. “It’s exciting to win. It kind of gives you that boost for state."
