SPRINGFIELD | Perhaps the best way to describe weather at Deer Lake Golf Course came from Lee’s Summit West coach Kim Rohlfing. “This is just a good grass-growing rain,” Rohlfing joked. It may have been a good day for lawns, but it was a bad day for golf. Even with a steady rain falling most of the day, Notre Dame de Sion shot a team score of 359 and took a 1-shot lead heading into the final day of the Class 2 golf tournament. St. Louis schools Cor Jesu and Nerinx Hall are tied at 360. Scores were considerably higher than expected. Only six golfers finished with scores in the 70s. Players dealt with the wind, rain and just all-round bad conditions during the first day of the 36-hole event. “When you try to hit it into the wind and with the rain, it’s tough,” said Carolyn Schorgl who led Sion with an 83. “If you don’t know how to go up a club it can really mess you up.” Schorgl was one of a handful of Kansas City area players who finished with scores in the low 80s. St. Teresa’s MaryKate Bird shot a 78, which put her in a second-place tie heading into the final day. Bird is 1 shot behind leader Kristen Hamel of Nerinx Hall. “This is the worst weather we have had all year,” said Blue Springs South’s Logan Thorp, who is in seventh place with an 80. “It’s been so nice all year, and then all of the sudden you go out and there is a day like this and everyone freaks out.” Other notable first-day results by Kansas City-area golfers include Lee’s Summit West’s Madi Maddox, who shot a 79; Belton’s Kim Hubbard, who had an 84; and Excelsior Springs’ Ashley Zimmerman, who shot an 85. Liberty is currently in sixth place in the team standings, 18 shots back at 377. Lee’s Summit North is eighth at 389, and Park Hill South is 11th at 397. | ||||||
